National Donor Day

So this post isn't tutoring related. It's not even teaching related. It's more about saying thank you. You see, February 14th is a pretty big deal. It's not just Valentine's Day.It's National Donor Day...the day when we celebrate those who have given OF themselves, literally.

On this day, I want to say thank you to all of those who have given the ultimate gift. The gift of life. I want to say thank you to the donor families who made the choice to donate the organs of a loved one after they no longer need them. I want to say thank you to those who have gone on, but made the choice before they died that they wanted to give something back, knowing that they would not take their organs with them. I want to say thank you to those, like me, who were blessed with the opportunity to give while living, and did so. My fellow Living Donors, I feel honored to call you my friends. (You can join us live on Monday Nights at #kidneychat) And last, but not least, I want to say thank you to those of you still walking among us who have chosen to give when your time here is over. Making the choice to potentially save up to 8 lives and improve the lives of countless others, and doing something about it.

If you would like to be an organ donor, but don't know what to do, it's so easy. First, go to Donate Life and sign up. Next, tell your friends and family so that they know what your wishes are. And last, spread the word. According to UNOS, as of 2:19 pm on 2/13/14, there are 121,205 people waiting for an organ right now.
77,270 on the active transplant list. Every 10 minutes another name is added to the transplant list. 18+ people will die today while awaiting a matched organ. One donor can save the lives of up to eight people. In 2013 there were 12,991 organ donors and 26,541 transplants done.

If you want to know more bout organ donation of any kind, please email or leave a comment. If you want to become a donor, please, follow the steps above. Happy Donor Day!!
