Today I want to talk about something a little different than my usual topic. Today I want to talk about something besides firearms and holsters and all of our usual fun. Today I want to talk about empowering young women. Not just any young women but young women who might not have a better chance.
I am talking this morning about at risk teen girls, girls in the foster care system.
Recently a girl came to live with us; a sixteen year old girl with a troubled past and a desire to be anywhere but home. This girl has made a few bad choices in her life, perhaps the worst being leaving her home and traveling with some homeless friends across three states. But whatever choices she has made, they landed her in my home, with a promise that the Cowboy and I will care for her for as long as she will let us and that we would love her for the rest of our lives.
Girls like her need something to do. They need to find something that they are good at. This is where we come in. I would like your help. I don’t know what I am going to call it but I would like to start a fund to help get at risk teenage girls started in shooting sports. I asked “S” what kind of sports she enjoyed, she said basketball and that she had always wanted to be a cheerleader but is concerned that at this point in her life it is too late to get onto the team (either one) as anything more than a bench warmer. So today we go to the range for the first time. Today, I will put a pistol and a rifle in her hand. Today I will teach her that she can be good at something and enjoy it. Something that we can all do as a family. Something that can win her recognition and even prizes if that is what she wants. Something that she can do for years to come (we pray).
It is my earnest prayer that she is not the first girl that can find something constructive to spend her time on through shooting sports and this endeavor. It is my desire to help many young women to find confidence and self worth through finding something that they enjoy and are good at.
I will try but I don’t think that I can do this on my own. I would appreciate any donations you can share to help, not just money but ammo, eyes, ears, range bags, firearms, anything you desire to share to help young ladies, let’s get these girls taught, give them a chance and show them that they have worth to us?
If you would like to donate money via paypal, please click the donate button in the right column on any page of this blog. If you would like to donate an item, email me at ThatTexasLady@gmail.com or leave a comment with your email address and I will email you so I can give you the address to mail them to.
We will also be having a few fundraisers in the months to come to help with this cause.
Also, if you have ideas for what to call this fund, I would love to hear your ideas.
Thank you so much, all of you, for your support of me, of women in the shooting world and of these girls. I am so blessed to just be allowed to be a part of this all.
How awesome is that! Good for you!
ReplyDeleteWhat a brilliant idea! I'll see what I can come up with.
ReplyDeleteThank you all so much!!
ReplyDeleteCount me in. I've got a new book debuting mid-April (Above Reproach), so let me see how I can help out and divert some proceeds your way.

Can't donate at this point, but can pray for your endeavor! As for a name...part of that signature at the bottom of the post would do nicely. "Be Strong". Says it all.
ReplyDeleteThank you so very much AOA and RabidAlien. Your help in any way, including prayers are much needed and appreciated.
ReplyDeleteIt is so encouraging to see these young women gain in strength and confidence just by taking our trips to the range.
This is awesome, is there a National Take Your Daughter to the Range Day event near you on Jun 9? There are several ranges in Texas participating, that might be a great way to pull in some of the local shooting community. Check www.NationalTakeYourDaughtertotheRangeDay.com for range locations and you can email me directly via a link on that site.
ReplyDeleteThanks Lynne!! I have been watching the event since the talk first started on Facebook and was one of the first followers when your facebook page came live. I have tried to get a few of our local ranges to participate but without having the time to run it myself, I couldn't get it going. I plan to take my own daughter as well as the girls I am working with to our local range that day and have arranged for several other mother/daughter teams to join us. I am so blessed to be a shooting mother in a day and time when things like NTYDTTRD are coming about. Thank you for all you do. I hope to be a bigger contributor next year.
